RJA #9c: Presentation Plan

For my presentation, I will most likely create a powerpoint presentation. In this powerpoint, I will include the main points of my research including my thesis, reasons, counterarguments and evidence supporting my thesis and reasons. I will also include links to informational websites about autism. I would like to include a video I found of Temple Gradin speaking about autism if I can figure out how to load it.

RJA #9b: Argument

Research Question:
What is the most effective form of treatment for autism?

Reasons:
- Early intervention gives autistic children a greater chance at leading a normal life in the future.

- Continued education by parents assists in forging and solidifying a bond with their autistic children. This will allow further development in an autistic child's social skills.

- Continued education by public schools allows autistic children a greater chance at a normal future because autistic children will be receiving important instruction more consistently than if only parents were providing education.

- Continued education by public schools will give autistic children in families that are unable to afford costly private treatments a chance to reach their full potential through continued daily instruction.

Complete Thesis Statement:
The best form of treatment for autistic children includes early intervention and continued education by both parents and public schools because early intervention greatly increases an autistic child's chance at leading a normal life in the future while early education from parents will help autistic children improve their social skills by teaching them how to bond with others and continued education from public schools will create a more constant and affordable education for autistic children.

Counterarguments:
- Educating a child with autism is a full-time job. Families with autistic children will suffer financially and emotionally from the amount of time one or both parents will have to put into educating their autistic child.

- Creating an education plan that consists of large amounts of one-on-one time between a teacher and an autistic child in a public school will only lead the autistic child to feel isolated from the rest of the children in the school and will not ultimately help the child improve social skills.

- Because so much is still unknown about the disorder, the amount of resources needed to support a unique and specific educational plan recommended for autistic children would take away from other students' education quality in public schools.

RJA #9a: Thesis Statement

Research Question:
What is the most effective form of treatment for autism?

Claim:
Early intervention and continued education by parents and public schools are the most effective forms of treatment for autistic children.

RJA #8a: Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary

""In the U.S., the children of older, white and highly educated parents are more likely to receive a diagnosis of autism or autism spectrum disorder," said lead author Karla C. Van Meter, who was a graduate student when the data were collected but is now at the Sonoma County Department of Public Health. "For this reason, the clusters we found are probably not a result of a common environmental exposure. Instead, the differences in education, age and ethnicity of parents comparing births in the cluster versus those outside the cluster were striking enough to explain the clusters.'"

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2010/01/uc-davis-researchers-find-california-autism-clusters-but-the-cause-is-a-bit-of-a-surprise.html

Quotation:

Although autism is on the rise throughout the United States, diagnosis information can be biased because "'[children with] older, white and highly educated parents are more likely to receive a diagnosis of autism...'"

Paraphrase:

During a study on possible environmental causes for autism, a batch of autism diagnosis was discovered in a few different geographical areas. According to the author of the study, the reasoning for the batches do not seem to be due to environmental causes but rather to the maturity, high education and high income of the parents of the autistic children. It is known that children of such parents are more often able to get the autism diagnosis and are able to get it at an earlier stage in life.

Summary:

Because children with older parents who have a higher education and a higher income are diagnosed earlier and more often with autism than other children, geographical batches of diagnosed autism showed up for this reason during a study to determine if environmental causes played a role in autism.

RJA #7a: Evaluation of Sources

Periodical Article:
Name of Author: Unknown
Title: New theory of autism suggests disorder may be reversible
Title of Periodical: The Nation on Web
Date: April 3, 2009
Page#: Unknown

The idea that autism could possibly be reversible is an exciting idea. After reading through the article, it looks legitimate at first glance. The research organization is mentioned as well as the actual research that took place. The newspaper that published the article, however, is not one I am familiar with. Also, the name of the author and page number from which the article comes from is not mentioned. Another reason I find the report of this research hard to believe is because there is not even a determined cause for autism yet. That fact makes it hard to believe a cure has been found already.

Website:
Compiler: Organization for Autism Research
Name of site: http://www.researchautism.org
Name of Institution: Organization for Autism Research
Date of Access: 3/8/2010

The website has plenty of links for information about autism including current news, links and support. There is an address and phone number where the organization can be reached along with an "About Us" section for a reader to check out. It gives information on education resources for autism as well. The website is well organized, provides plenty of information and makes it easy for a person to contact the organization behind the website.

RJA# 3c: Research Question

What are the arguments for the cause of autism and how is it being diagnosed/treated? How effective are the treatments?

Is there one specific cause and treatment for autism?

Are new reasons for the cause and treatments of autism being explored?

How is autism being diagnosed? Is there research for a definite diagnosis procedure?

RJA #3a: Research Topic Exploration

So far in researching autism in children and possible causes and treatments, I have found a lot of studies involved with cognitive development in relation to autism. Most have been scholarly journals but I have found some useful organizations dedicated to helping families with autistic relatives. The most interesting thing about these websites is that some have a newsletter filled with new or updated information regarding autism. There are also some government websites involved in research for learning disabilities that could be helpful.

So far, there seem to be two main causes linked to autism. One is genetic vulnerability and the other is environmental factors. It will be very interesting to discover the details of each theory. As for treatment, it seems early diagnosis (which involves recognizing a series of signs) is the key. I am hoping to find a study or two dedicated to a more absolute way of diagnosis, though.

RJA #2b: Research Topic

I chose autism in children as my research topic. I chose this as my topic because I worked at a daycare a few summers ago in a class of two year olds and one of the boys was autistic. He was a very unique child and I eventually formed a bond with him even though the other teachers were convinced he was a lost cause. Because of him, I hope to someday work with autistic children. I also feel that many people are not familiar enough with autism but, because the disability is becoming more and more common, people should be.
What I know about autism is what I learned while working with the little autistic boy that summer. Autistic children are very focused and seem to have a one-track mind as they will focus very hard on one thing. They are easily frustrated when they cannot accomplish what they have set their minds on accomplishing and they are fans of repetition. They do not like to interact with other children or people very often unless it is on their terms and affection is rarely shown. Although they have an abnormality, they are by no means unintelligent. I also know that the official cause for autism is undetermined and that there is no way to diagnose autism other than recognizing the symptoms.
Through this research, I want to learn what the possible causes of autism are. I want to know why or why not each possibility is plausible. I want to know what research is being done to come up with a definite way of preventing and of diagnosing the disability. I think that without these tools autism will become the next ADD/ADHD and will become grossly over-diagnosed.
