RJA #7a: Evaluation of Sources

Periodical Article:
Name of Author: Unknown
Title: New theory of autism suggests disorder may be reversible
Title of Periodical: The Nation on Web
Date: April 3, 2009
Page#: Unknown

The idea that autism could possibly be reversible is an exciting idea. After reading through the article, it looks legitimate at first glance. The research organization is mentioned as well as the actual research that took place. The newspaper that published the article, however, is not one I am familiar with. Also, the name of the author and page number from which the article comes from is not mentioned. Another reason I find the report of this research hard to believe is because there is not even a determined cause for autism yet. That fact makes it hard to believe a cure has been found already.

Website:
Compiler: Organization for Autism Research
Name of site: http://www.researchautism.org
Name of Institution: Organization for Autism Research
Date of Access: 3/8/2010

The website has plenty of links for information about autism including current news, links and support. There is an address and phone number where the organization can be reached along with an "About Us" section for a reader to check out. It gives information on education resources for autism as well. The website is well organized, provides plenty of information and makes it easy for a person to contact the organization behind the website.

  1. It seems like you were really thorough in checking out your sources! You checked for all the right things, and were skeptical about what you would accept as true or not. I think you have a clear knowledge about what makes a good source.

  2. It looks as though you put good thought into evlauating the sources. For the first one, not knowing the newspaper could I would think would be alright because finding sources you have never found before is what you are trying to do. Maybe look into finding the a site for the newspaper and try to find the author there. The second site looks reputable so I would use that one for finding other sites as well through the links section mentioned.

  3. I think you looked for all the right things when evaluating these sources! It is very good that you did not assume your periodical article to be legitimate without delving more into it. Also, I think it is definitely a good sign that the website has contact information because it shows they can back up the information! Good job!
